New 'shock call' telephone scam: they make you believe a relative caused an accident to demand money
Police are warning about the 'shock call', a scam in which criminals pose as relatives or authorities claiming that a loved one has had an accident and urgently needs money.
Authorities are warning about a new type of telephone scam known as the ‘shock call’, designed to exploit victims’ emotional state. The scammers ring posing as a relative or as police or medical authorities.
During the call, they report that a loved one has caused a serious accident and urgently needs money to pay compensation, medical expenses or avoid legal problems. Emotional pressure and urgency are the keys to the deception.
Police recommend staying calm, verifying the information by contacting the supposedly affected relative directly, and never making transfers or payments under pressure. The criminals usually request large amounts via bank transfers or money transfers.
Security forces emphasise the importance of hanging up and verifying any information before acting, as well as reporting these attempted scams to assist in their prosecution.
