Commissions and barracas: the year-round work that makes Hogueras de Alicante possible
Hogueras de San Juan is not just a few days of celebration; behind it lies the continuous effort of commissions and barracas that work all year round to make the festivities a reality.
Hogueras de Alicante is much more than the lights and flames that mark the nights of San Juan. Behind each monument, each street party and each festive event lies constant work that extends throughout the entire year.
The festival commissions and barracas are the invisible engine of this celebration, declared of International Tourist Interest. From organising charity events to planning the plantàs, these groups dedicate time, effort and resources to keeping a centuries-old tradition alive.
The construction of the hogueras, the coordination of the bellezas del foc, the fraternity dinners and the preliminary events all require constant dedication. Without this work behind the scenes, the festival as we know it would not be possible.
This year, with the celebration in full swing, the commissions remind us that Hogueras does not begin when the lights are lit, but months earlier, when neighbours and volunteers gather to dream of and build together Alicante’s most important festival.
