Alicante Council may withdraw subsidies from Hogueras de San Juan committees due to tensions
Barcala's municipal government responds to unrest generated in the Hogueras de San Juan festivals by proposing to eliminate aid to committees.
Alicante Council has opened the door to withdrawing subsidies from some Hogueras de San Juan committees amid growing tensions with the festival collective. The measure responds to the unrest expressed by the Hogueras de San Juan over recent municipal decisions.
The government of Luis Barcala justifies this possibility as a response to the attitude of certain committees during the conflict. The decision could affect the financial aid that the Council grants annually for the celebration of the festivals.
The Hogueras de San Juan are Alicante’s main festival and bring together dozens of neighbourhood committees. The relationship between the Council and the Hogueras de San Juan world is going through one of its most delicate moments, with mutual reproaches over festival management.
It has not yet been specified which committees could be affected nor the specific criteria for the withdrawal of funds. The announcement has generated concern amongst the associative fabric of Alicante’s festivals.
