Casa de la Concordia opens in Alicante with tributes to Suárez and Juan Carlos I
The new cultural space in Alicante inaugurates focusing on the Transition, without references to the democratic memory initially planned.
The Casa de la Concordia has opened its doors in Alicante with a different focus to the original project. The space, which initially aimed to be the reference centre for democratic memory in the Comunitat Valenciana, has inaugurated with emphasis on the Spanish Transition.
The inaugural exhibition highlights figures such as Adolfo Suárez and King Juan Carlos I, moving away from the planned treatment of historical memory. The new approach criticises those who “attempt to reopen wounds” and “question the consensus” of the democratic period.
The change of direction has generated debate about the role of the cultural space and its original mission. The Casa de la Concordia is located in the Alicante capital as a cultural facility of the Generalitat Valenciana.
