The DGT confirms that the V-16 beacon 'is here to stay' despite confusion over its use

The traffic director announces a renewed push for the V-16 beacon ahead of summer, though he acknowledges uncertainty amongst drivers regarding its application.

Pere Navarro, director general of the DGT, appeared this Monday before the Road Safety Committee in Congress to confirm that the V-16 beacon will be definitively promoted as a road safety device.

Ahead of the summer travel period, Tráfico will promote the extension and normalisation of this luminous device, which is progressively replacing traditional emergency warning triangles in the event of breakdown or accident.

Navarro acknowledged that ‘confusion’ and ‘uncertainty’ exist amongst drivers regarding the correct use of the beacon, which is why the summer campaign will include information to clarify how it works.

The V-16 has been mandatory since 2026 for new vehicles and coexists with triangles until 2027, when the latter will be definitively banned on conventional roads for safety reasons.
