Sarcopenia affects those over 65 but more than 70% of cases go undiagnosed

This silent disease causes loss of muscle mass, strength and autonomy in older people, though most cases go unnoticed.

Sarcopenia is a disease that primarily affects people over 65 years of age and is characterised by the progressive loss of muscle mass, strength and functional capacity. Despite its impact on the quality of life and autonomy of older people, more than 70% of cases are not diagnosed.

Although it does not have the apparent severity of a hip fracture or a heart attack, sarcopenia significantly reduces the mobility and independence of those who suffer from it. The lack of diagnosis makes early treatment and the maintenance of autonomy difficult.

Experts highlight the importance of detecting this condition in time through specific medical assessments. Adapted physical exercise and adequate nutrition are fundamental for preventing and treating the muscle loss associated with ageing.
