SEO advises against picking up chicks from the ground during springtime

The Spanish Ornithological Society reminds the public not to pick up young birds from the ground, as many are learning to fly and their parents continue to feed them.

With the arrival of spring, a natural phenomenon returns that raises questions amongst the public: finding chicks on the ground. The Sociedad Española de Ornitología (SEO) reminds people that these young birds should not be picked up.

The majority of chicks found outside the nest are in the process of learning to fly, and their parents continue to care for and feed them from nearby. Removing them can interrupt this natural process.

Experts recommend observing from a distance and only intervening if the bird is clearly injured or in immediate danger. In case of doubt, it is preferable to contact a wildlife recovery centre or the relevant authorities.

This recommendation seeks to prevent unnecessary interventions which, although well-intentioned, can harm the natural development of birds.
